Dear Friends of the Academy,
We would like to invite you to the upcoming Anna-Maria Kellen Lecture by Avery Gordon, Professor of Sociology, University of California, Santa Barbara.
The lecture entitled “Breitenau: The Workhouse Project” will take place at the American Academy in Berlin on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at 7:00 pm.
In her lecture, Avery Gordon will read from and discuss Notes for the Breitenau Room of the Workhouse—a Project by Ines Schaber and Avery Gordon, published by dOCUMENTA (13) and Hatje Cantz. The notebook centers on the former monastery, workhouse, and prison known as Breitenau. Breitenau has a long history as a harsh place of confinement and “correction,” where many have been imprisoned: prisoners of war, vagabonds, prostitutes, the poor, socialists, communists, Jews, foreign workers, troubled youth, nonconformist girls, and others. The notebook engages with Breitenau’s long history and attempts to provide a hospitable space, rather than a disciplinary one, for those who were held there.
The evening will be moderated by Anselm Franke, Berlin-based curator and publicist.
Please find the invitation and RSVP form for the lecture in the attachment.
